Episode 5: A Day in the Life of a Hero

The heat is sweltering in the city of Surburbura.

But we haven’t done anything yet today!

We find our heroes in Hotness Labs beneath their home.

“But you’ve gone too far. This is a story about a standard day. And don’t ruin the surprise.”

Right. Zooming back in time, we find ourselves on a beautiful morning in the city of Surburbura. It may seem peaceful, but that illusion is about to be broken:

Braar! Braar! Braar! Braar!

It’s six o’clock, and time for average Joes to get to work, aided by their trusty alarm clocks. And so it is in the home of Dr. Hill and Dr. Belinda, two friends cohabitating and strangely never out of touch.

Their alarms go off as they sleep in their separate beds, the tips of their fingers caressing at every moment. With practiced and careful motions, they turn the noise to silence, remove the sheets, and greet the morning with the grog of adulthood.

Then, into the bathrooms they go, a slit through the wall just wide enough for a finger in order to provide some modicum of privacy, and then—

You know, I do believe that we should skip all this part.

“But why, dearest? We’re trying to show the people we’re just like them.”

You mean boring? I think they got that picture.

As clear as Kodiac. We skip ahead, to the sweltering heat, where our two scientists are hard at work in their Hotness Labs.

“Again, with a partition between us. Be sure to mention that.”

But why is it important, sweetest?

“For the surprise, dearest.”

Though a wall separates them, they can never truly be apart, at least their fingers always in contact.

“And done. To me, Dr. Belinda.”

But Dr. Hill, I have only just begun the centrifuge.

“It can wait. This is far more important.”

Well…alright. But if I lose my cure for the common cold, you will owe me a Nobel.

The two stand as one, dancing along the wall for Dr. Belinda to leave her lab and enter Dr. Hill’s. And there, he presents her with a ring. It might not be Nobel, but would a church bell do?

“They aren’t that kind of ring.”

Really? But they seem so on genre.

“They are something far better. Dearest?”

Why honey-bunch, I don’t quite know what to say…

“Say you will.”

I just might.

I’m getting mixed messages.

Alright, but just this once.

With practiced ease, Dr. Hill slips the ring onto her finger.

“Actually, I just gave it to her.”

Slips the ring into her palm.

There was nothing sneaky about it.

Slips her the ring in the most boringly anticlimactic fashion.

That’s better.

And they each put them on.

It really isn’t quite my color. Now what?

“Now? If it worked…this.”

And…Oh my! With a strange and practiced ease, Dr. Hill and Dr. Belinda pull apart, defying all laws of friendship and love.

Why darling! However did you do it?

“The rings provide just enough current to last us two weeks. We’ll never be as powerful apart as we are together, but if it gives us a chance—”

I’m flying to Tahiti.

“And I’ll stay right here.”

See you upon my return?

“And in my dreams every night.”

And so, with a passionate kiss, the two head off on some much needed alone time.

“For the first time in…how long?”

Three years, darling. And don’t expect a ring.

“I shall delete your number if I have to.”

You always do know just the right thing to say.

For distance makes the heart grow fonder, and distance after an eternity together is true bliss indeed.
